Vannen Notes

Vannen Farleth, 3rd son of Baron Kurtten Farleth of Skullcrag Keep in the Duchy of Karach.
Your father was one of the ‘special’ counsellors appointed to assist Mad Prince Kolven, elder brother of King Torrens II, in his ‘rule’ over the Duchy of Karach. You grew up in a household of manly men dedicated to soldiering—mostly chasing bandits and pirates, but occasionally called upon to put down monstrosities from the northern foothills of the Chillpeaks. Your younger sister, the baby of the family, Amalia, was the beauty in the family and was married to Mad Prince Kolven, cementing your family’s ties to the royal household.
You were assigned to rank in Queen Elissa’s Loyal Lancers, a squadron which was paid from King Torren’s wife’s lands and set to patrolling the northern frontier. Your oldest brother, Torman, as heir to the Barony spent his days in company of your father and Mad Prince Kolven. Your elder brother, Vissayn, was sent to the Royal Court in Aldking to learn the ways of the King’s Justice.
Life was good and you rose through hard work, dedication and some personal bravery to the rank of Major-Sergeant, and were given command of the Standard-bearer Squad. Then rebellion broke out eight months ago in the Duchies of Uthred and Ghent. The Lancers were sent west in the early days, and held their own in a fair number of battles, before being recalled to join the King’s Army in Karach.
There you and your comrades were feted as heroes and victors. Your family was present and you were swept up in the martial aura, swept up to pledge yourself to Barraban and to be accepted into his holy brotherhood of war.
Unfortunately, life and politics continued around you. Somehow, your beautiful, innocent sister became the mistress of King Torrens and your brothers began to speak of the growing tyranny of the king. They became firmly embroiled in plotting with the King’s brother. And somehow, you caught the eye of Queen Elissa, who began to show undue attention to you. Before anything could be consummated spring arrived and the King’s army marched west against the rebels…and into a type of war they were wholly unprepared for.
The Battle of Cadence Falls was a disaster which saw the King’s army shattered and scattered. The rebels of Ghent were aided by necromancers and an army of skeletal warriors. The Queen’s Lancers held the rearguard and fought bravely allowing the King and his cohort to escape, but took grievous losses. Of the 300 soldiers you had served with, only 80 survived; of the 12 men in your Standard-bearer squad, only you and 3 others fought free of the undead, largely thanks to the holy prayers of Barraban that protected you.

Returning to the fortresses of Karach, the love-triangle between the King, your sister, the Queen and Mad Prince Kolven became even more of a fulcrum for insult and politics.
Three weeks ago, your father and the King took you aside and gave you a special mission (in part, you think, to keep the Queen away from you and to prevent you from getting swept up in court politics): take your men south to the frontier and investigate the troubles. Is there a connection between the forces laying waste to the Reyd River valley. You are to meet up with the militia in Gorloch’s Bastion and defeat the forces of chaos in the King’s name!
The journey south was fraught with danger—orcs were slain, brigands put to flight, and even a wyvern defeated. Your 3 Lancers (Guthred, Korrrl One-eye, and Kleeze) have attached themselves to the militia at Isrick’s Cairn and you await in the Temple of the Elder Gods for the Heroes of the Cairn to arrive…needing healing and help.
